Wilderness First Aid

These courses move beyond the basics, providing critical information and skills for anyone who spends time in areas where professional help is not readily available. This includes hikers, bikers, campers, off-road enthusiasts, outdoor professionals, camp counselors, and anyone who spends time off the beaten path.​

Wilderness & Remote First Aid

This course is a classroom course that includes lecture, discussion, group exercises, and extensive hands-on practice. Scenario-based practice sessions give students the opportunity to put their skills to the test and work as a team.

 

Prerequisites: Must be at least 14 years old and hold current adult CPR/AED certification.

Course length: 16 hours - over 2 days

​

Curriculum & Certification: This course is based on the Red Cross Wilderness & Remote First Aid curriculum and meets the Scouting America Wilderness First Aid requirement. Upon completion, students receive a 2-year certification.

 

Topics include:

  • Injury & Illness Prevention

  • Emergency decision making

  • Primary and Secondary Assessments

  • Prevention, recognition & treatment of common illness & injury

    • ​Head/Brain, Neck and Spinal Injuries

    • Heat-Related Emergencies

    • Hypothermia

    • Altitude-Related Illnesses

    • Allergies and Anaphylaxis

    • Burns

    • Bone and Joint Injuries

    • Wounds and Wound Infections

Throughout the class, students will also be asked to improvise solutions using common tools and gear. Scenarios are based on the interests and activities of the group to ensure relevance.

This course includes both indoor and outdoor components.

First Aid for Overlanding

This1-day hybrid course includes lecture, discussion, group exercises, and hands-on practice dedicated to essential skills to recognize and respond to common illnesses and injuries in the backcountry. We combine several Red Cross classes with extra skill practice and scenarios relevant to the off-road and overland communities.

 

Prerequisites: None. This course is not recommended for children under 12 years old.

Course length: 8 hours

  • Adult & Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED (online + classroom) - 2 Year Certification

  • Head, Neck, Bone, & Joint Injuries & Splinting

  • Anaphylaxis and Allergic Reactions
